I’ve always known I was fortunate to be able to stay home with my kids when they were young. But once my youngest child started kindergarten, I knew it was time to go back to work after 6 years off the job. Is it possible for a woman to rekindle her career after taking time off to be with the kids? Yes, but it may take some time. A survey by the Center for Work Life Policy in
New York shows that 74% of stay-at-home moms who want to go back are able to. Most who don’t get jobs are looking for part-time or flexible jobs, which are difficult to find.
A book by Carol Fishman Cohen and Vivian Steir Rabin, Back on the Career Track, offers hope to stay-at-home moms that want to relaunch their career. The book says almost a quarter of all college-educated women with children under 18 are not working for pay. Companies are concerned about job shortages due to retiring baby boomers. This has sparked interest in stay-at-home moms and the possibility that they’ll return to the workforce. As a result, the environment for moms who are relaunchers should remain favorable for several years to come.
          Â
Once you realize you’re ready to work again, you need to decide is if you need to be there when your kids come home from school. If you want to be home to meet the school bus, your options will be limited, but it’s still possible. Part-time or work-at-home jobs may not be available in your chosen career, so chances are you’ll have to take a substantial pay cut. You may need to take several part-time jobs to get the number or hours you require and still be flexible for the kids.
If you decide to work full-time, there will be many more options available to you. However, you still may need to take a pay cut. One study by CWP found that women experienced a 37 percent salary decrease for the first new job they had taken after being out more than three years.
What can you do about the five plus years gap in your resume when you weren’t working for pay? Instead of organizing your resume chronologically, some experts suggest arranging it by skillset so you don’t emphasize the downtime. And don’t discount the skills you used to raise a family. Multi-tasking is a valuable skill in business, and its something you used to manage several schedules for different people (the kids) that included different schools and extra-curricular activities. Listing volunteer activities can also be helpful in managing gaps in your resume.
Several websites are available to help line up moms with family-friendly work. Check out MomCorps.com or Aquent.com. The final thing to remember is to be patient. It may take some time to find your ideal work situation, but it can be worth that wait to find a job that fits your family.

Based upon PewsResearch.Org fewer Mothers prefer full-time work today then back in 1997. Back in 1997 32% of Working Moms Prefered to Work full time compared to 2007 where the number is much lower, down to 21%. To read the full article go to http://pewresearch.org/pubs/536/working-women
Making the decision to go back to work after having a baby is a very difficult decision for a mom. How do I know? Well, I am being faced with that same decision. I have my own business and will continue with my business because it is my passion. I also have a unique opportunity to go back to work. As I struggle with not being able to stay at home with my daughter, I also struggle with wanting to get back into the workforce and learn and develop new skills. The positive piece about going back to work is that I will be doing work that will help take my business to a new level. I am sure that there are other moms out there that face these same decisions. Whether you have to go back to work or if you even struggle with staying home and raising your children. Either way, it is not easy and we would love to hear what your comments and/or suggestions are about this topic. If we get enough responses, we may create a new workshop for moms about “To Work or Not to Work”. Please forward this months newsletters to your mom friends and ask them to post their comments.

DIVERSITY WORKSHOP FOR MOMS
Dialoging with your children about diversity in the 21st CenturyÂ
Have you ever been in a situation where your child has made a comment about another person who is different from them? How did you handle the situation and could you have done a better job if you were better prepared? This workshop is designed to disseminate information rather than to change attitudes and behaviors around diversity. We delve into creating dialogs with our children about being different. In this workshop you will learn
Diversity is an asset
Diversity terms and definitions
How to seek to understand and not to judge
How to start discussions with your children about differences in others
Turn a potentially embarrassing moment into a positive conversation with your children. Take time to learn to be pro-active with your kids around diversity issues, instead of re-active.Â

As a professional I always ask my clients for feedback. It is very important that my workshops evolve with my clients. My passion is helping others and I do this through my workshops. I want to share what one of my clients has to say about my Time Management for Moms workshop
Sue Anderson’s Time Management for Moms should be the first to-do task for any work-at-home mom!
In the late 1990s, before I had a family, I registered for a Franklin-Covey time management course. I used the skills in that course when I started my family and up through the start of my home business. But I quickly discovered that their skills were not enough to handle tracking the many and varied responsibilities faced by a work-at-home mom. My accomplishments began to break down just as quickly – until I signed up for Sue’s workshop.
Using Sue’s daily log, I analyzed all the tasks that I accomplished over the course of one week and pinpointed my more repetitive tasks. Her master log and daily to-do lists then clarified the best days and times for those tasks and how to easily add new tasks for the week. I can now better pace myself over the entire week so I’m not left exhausted at the end of each day. In fact, I’m actually finding more time for myself! She also helped me to visualize my future goals in a clear step-by-step process that I can initiate immediately and use to build a much stronger long-term business plan.
I also signed up for her Myers-Briggs analysis, which acted as the perfect companion to this workshop. It deepened my understanding of how I work through my responsibilities. Using it, I can now structure my goals to work in harmony with my basic personality type and thus achieve whatever I wish to accomplish.
Thanks for setting me straight, Sue!

Do you know your “TYPE” of Mothering Style?
Mothering Styles is a workshop that was created based upon the book “Mothering Styles” by Janet Penley. In this workshop you learn that moms come in many different styles and there is no one mom that is perfect. Depending on your mothering style you learn what drains your energy and how to re-energize yourself through out the day. As a 21st. Century mom we need to learn more about our mothering styles and how we can maximize our strengths to be the best mom we can be for ourselves and for our families.
In this workshop you learn:

We are looking for Training Consultants. If you are a mom with a training background and are looking to work from home send your resume to trainingconsultants@changehappens.org
In the spirit of educating the 21st. Century mom, I joined a moms biz group. The group consists of Moms who either own their own business or are looking into starting their own business. We meet once a month to share ideas, support on anothers businesses by giving positive feedback and we work on our goals to become prosperous.Â
At the end of these meetings we may have some action items that we need to follow up on. This is the reason why I am writing this post. I am sharing my information from my action items in hopes that it may help those that are reading my blog.Â
My first action item was to send a link to the group which I did but I would like to post it for others. The link that I sent was the Home Based Working Moms network. http://www.hbwm.com/ they are a great group to be part of while you build your business. Yes, I am part of this group and I have benefited tremendously from the networking aspect. My business was also featured in their newsletter (e-mail and print) this month which is also a perk for being a member.
The second action item was to forward an e-mail to the group about a free meeting that is to take place Monday night. The meeting is about how the “Seceret” also known as the law of attraction can improve your business. I did e-mail and if I missed anyone please e-mail me and I will send the e-mail.
The third action item was to send out info on how to set up your business in pleasanton. Go on the internet and type in the following web address http://www.ci.pleasanton.ca.us/business/license/ this will give you the step by step process to get a business liscence in Pleasanton. Most of us are sole proprieters and we end up using our social security number when you prepare taxes or for other transactions and you do not need to do that. If you go to https://sa1.www4.irs.gov/sa_vign/newFormSS4.do you can fill out the on-line form and your will receive your employee tax id which is what you use if you own your own business. Therefore you do not need to give out your social security number. I hope this helps everyone out and if you need more info you can e-mail me directly or we can discuss in the next meeting.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting which will be May 5th, the location will be sent out by Jami.
Please post any comments below about this post.

Welcome to CHANGE HAPPENS!Â
Change does happen when you become a Mom.

This Blog is about workshops specifically designed for Mom’s. I, being a mom myself, wanting to stay home more with my daughter decided to use my skills as a corporate trainer and create workshops that stimulate and educate the 21st Century Mom. My vision of this blog is to create a community for moms to read and share what wonderful things that are available for us as Mom’s to help educate develop and grow as Mothers. I am going to introduce the suite of workshops that I created for Mom’s.
Suite of Workshops for Mom’s:
How to sign up for a Workshop:
Time Management for Mom’s (Featured Workshop)
The Time Management for Mom’s workshop is energetic and interactive, it will help you take back control of your time. Time is a precious commodity now days and to waste it can be frustrating. Learn how to be pro-active and productive instead of re-active and stressed. We conducted a time management survey for mom’s and found out the following: 49% of Mom’s work area was disorganized, 57% of Mom’s sometimes set goals for themselves and 67% of Mom’s do not set aside time for themselves each day. With this information and much more we created a workshop that was based upon the outcomes of the survey, so during the two hour workshop you will learn:                       Â
These tools will help you become a less stressed mom and a more productive and efficient mom so that you can create more time with your family and YOURSELF.
